Gustav Robert Schilling was born on February 26, 1861, in Breitenbach, Germany, to
Johann Carl Schilling and Rosina Schilling (née Franke). He served in the Prussian
army from June 11, 1878, to February 27, 1881, before enlisting as a soldier-musician
in the Dutch army on March 1, 1881. On April 10, 1883, he volunteered for service in
the Dutch colonial army (KNIL), rising to the rank of sergeant bugler before retiring
on October 21, 1896, in Padang, Sumatra. After his retirement, Schilling became a
professional photographer, working in Fort de Kock (1898–1903) and later in Sawah
Loento (1904–1908). He moved to Buitenzorg in 1909, though it is unclear if he
continued his photographic work there. Schilling died on September 1, 1917, in
Buitenzorg.
