Gustav Robert Schilling was born on 26 Februari 1861 in Breitenbach (Germany) as the son of Johann Carl Schilling and Rosina Schilling (born Franke). He served in the Prussian army between 11 June 1878 and 27 February 1881 before enlisting as a soldier musician in the Dutch army on 1 March 1881. Several years later, on 10 April 1883, he volunteered to serve in the Dutch colonial army KNIL where he reached the rank of sergeant bugler and retired on 21 October 1896 in Padang on Sumatra. After his retirement Schilling became a professional photographer based in Fort de Kock (1898-1903) and later in Sawah Loento (1904-1908). He moved to Buitenzorg in 1909, but it is not clear whether he was then still active as a photographer. G.R. Schilling died on 1 September 1917 in Buitenzorg.
